Readers Day | How often do you lie?

“Ask me no questions and I’ll tell you no lies.” - Oliver Goldsmith

Almost everyone knows that lying is a negative habit and generally a bad thing to do, but we still continue doing it anyway.

A lie is type of deception in the form of an untruthful statement with the intention to deceive, often with the further intention to maintain a secret or reputation, or to avoid punishment. To lie is to state something one knows is false with the intention that it be taken for the truth by someone else.

I’ve heard a whole lot of people who said they hate lying, but honestly now, how often do people lie?

It’s kinda difficult to find out how people (as in the majority) lie, but what is possible is to try and find out how often do the readers of this blog lie. It will be a test of honesty and courage and it will certainly make you feel a bit “lighter” on the inside.

How often do you lie? Rate each of the following scenarios with a number from 1 to 5; 1 meaning that you rarely lie in that environment and 5 meaning that you always lie.

At school (skip this one if you’re not in school):
On the job:
With family:
With friends:
On the phone:
On the Internet:
While shopping:
In your own mind:
To yourself:

I’ll let you know how often I lie later in the comments, until then feel free to to be honest in your answers. In addition to rating how much you lie in a certain environment, also try and motivate your rating (eg. Internet-4, because I can be whoever I want to be and I enjoy being someone else).

Nobody will judge you here!

Even if honestly you need to lie, always be honest.

  1. How do you call it if I lie about how often do I lie?

Sometimes we lie to ourself.. You can’t actually count your lies.
I like to believe I don’t lie that much but I’m not really sure if I’m lying to myself or not. To be honest this matter stopped being interesting to me when I realized I’ll never have an accurate answer. As for others, I always think they are lying first and believe them only if they somehow prove me wrong.

  2. Umm, I believe that if you lie about how often you lie you’re deceiving yourself! Because the purpose of the question wasn’t to tag you as a liar or not, it’s purpose was to make YOU think about it, because as you said “I like to believe I don’t lie that much but I’m not really sure if I’m lying to myself or not.” You can’t figure that out without giving it some thought.

Nobody said to count your lies, but you can rate how often you do lie in certain situations. For example, on the internet most people lie twice as much as they do in the offline world.
As for your lack of interest in this subject …to me it seems kinda silly. Look at it this way: we all know (some admit it, others not) that this world will come to an end someday, and even if we don’t have an accurate answer about when it will happen, we’re still busy living and making plans for the future (should we stop living?).

Anyhow, try to rate how often you lie in each of those situations and then motivate your rating. You will find out new things about yourself.

  3. Why don’t you tell us how you rated yourself? :)
As for me.. I already said I don’t lie and I consider I act almost the same in all the situations presented above.

  4. “I’ll let you know how often I lie later in the comments” - Have a little patience.

Good for you that you don’t lie, LuKiaNo! Just out of curiosity, is it difficult to live without lying? To me it seems kinda brutal…

Now I’m curious to see the answers of some “normal” (lying) people. :)

  5. Well, since nobody has had the courage to step forward, I’ll break the ice.
